How to do the Fire hydrants Right

Primary: Glutes.

Fire hydrants are a great exercise for targeting the gluteal muscles. This exercise involves lifting your leg away from your body while on all fours, which closely mimics the position of a dog urinating on a fire hydrant – hence the name. It's an effective way to improve hip mobility and strength, especially for the gluteus medius muscle, which is important for stabilizing the pelvis and maintaining proper leg alignment. Fire hydrants can also engage the core, particularly the obliques, as they help maintain balance and stability throughout the movement.

Step by step

  1. 1

Start on all fours with your hands directly under your shoulders and your knees under your hips.

  2. 2

Keeping your knee bent at a 90-degree angle, lift your right leg out to the side as high as you comfortably can without shifting your hips.

  3. 3

Lower your leg back to the starting position in a controlled manner. Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Coaching cues

  • Keep your core engaged throughout the exercise to prevent your back from sagging.
  • Avoid rotating your hips; they should stay level with the ground.
  • Move slowly and control the motion to maximize the engagement of the glutes and minimize momentum.
