How to do the Overhead Cable Extension
Primary: Triceps.
The Overhead Cable Extension is a strength exercise that primarily targets the triceps. This movement helps to build the long head of the triceps, which often gets overlooked in other triceps workouts. It's performed using a cable machine with a rope attachment, allowing for a fuller range of motion and effective isolation of the triceps.
Step by step
- 1
Attach a rope to the high pulley of a cable station.
- 2
Grasp the rope with both hands and stand with your back to the weight stack.
- 3
Extend your arms fully above your head, locking out the elbows.
- 4
Slowly lower the rope behind your head while keeping your upper arms stationary.
- 5
Pause briefly, then return to the starting position by extending your arms back up.
Coaching cues
- Keep your elbows close to your head to engage the triceps effectively.
- Avoid using excessive weight to maintain proper form and prevent injury.
- Control the movement throughout the exercise to maximize triceps engagement.
